Voters Pass Redondo Beach Chamber-Supported School Bond
New
Hope on the Way for Aging School Facilities
Measure C, the school bond supported by the Redondo
Beach Chamber of Commerce & Visitors Bureau (RBCC & VB),
passed by an overwhelming 66% of the vote on the
February 5 city-wide ballot. Nearly six months ago, RBCC
& VB was one of the first local organizations to
sup-port the Redondo Beach Unified School District
proposed bond measure. Measure C allows for, among other
things, the update of our 100 year old high school,
which will include new athletic facilities, state of the
art turf fields, a synthetic track replacing the dirt
track and an aquatics complex available to the entire
community.
“The Redondo Beach business community plays an important
role in our school district by sup-porting our young
people and their transition into their careers,” Glenn
Bishop, Chair of the RBCC & VB Board of Directors.
“Redondo Beach businesses depend on our school district
to provide adequate facilities in order to train our
youth so they are ready to participate in the Redondo
Beach economy. Measure C will do just that,” continued
Bishop.
Measure C also includes financing for the elementary and
middle school venues in areas such as performing arts
and athletics. This will include gymnasiums and soccer
fields, meeting places for the Boys Scouts of America
and computer labs.
Based on the average homeowner’s assessment, Measure C
adds approximately 28 cents per day or $8 per month on
to Redondo Beach property taxes. The total amount of
funds for the proposed 30 year bond is $145 million. A
citizens oversight committee will review the spending
annually to make sure the money is spent on projects for
the schools and not teacher or admin-istrative salaries.
Members of the oversight committee will not include
district employees or its vendors.
The following are schools that will benefit from the
bond monies:
Redondo Union High School
Adams Middle School
Parras Middle School
Alta Vista Elementary School
Beryl Elementary School
Birney Elementary School
Jefferson Elementary School
Lincoln Elementary School
Madison Elementary School
Tulita Elementary School
Washington Elementary School
Edison School Site (South Bay Adult Site)
“The Redondo Beach Chamber and our business community
will continue to stand by our won-derful school
district,” stated Marna Smeltzer, President/CEO of RBCC
& VB.

Chamber
Supports Redondo Beach School Bond in 2008
The Chamber
supports the Redondo Beach Unified School District bond
measure set for the February 5, 2008 ballot. The bond will
allow for the update of the over 100 year old high school
which will also include new athletic facilities along with
new state of the art turf fields, a synthetic track
replacing the dirt track, and an aquatics complex available
to the entire community.
“The Redondo
Beach Chamber is happy to support an important measure that
will have an impact on the community and surrounding
businesses,” stated Marna Smeltzer, President and CEO of the
Chamber. “This is a win-win for both the business community
and the young people who will learn at school and eventually
join the workforce in Redondo Beach,” continued Smeltzer.
The bond measure will also include monies for the elementary
and middle schools venues in the areas such as the
performing arts and athletics. This will include; gymnasiums
and soccer fields, meeting places for the Boys Scouts of
America, and computer labs.
The bond measure attempts to complete the job of an older
measure. The new measure will dictate that Redondo Beach
School District’s infrastructure will be taken care of over
the next 30-40 years.
Based on the average homeowner’s assessment, the bond will
add approximately 28 cents/day or $8/month on to property
taxes. The total amount of funds for the proposed 30 year
bond is $145 million. A citizens’ oversight committee will
review the spending annually to make sure the money is spent
on projects for the schools and not teacher or
administrative salaries. Members of the oversight committee
will not include District employees or its vendors.
“This is for the
good of our community and will help position our youth in a
competitive advantage with modern facilities,” stated
Charles Gale, Jr., Chair of the Chamber’s Government
Relations Council. “To not support this bond, would leave
our schools in shambles and affect the education process
resulting in a poor skilled and educated workforce,”
continued Gale.
Below is the list of schools that will benefit from the bond
monies:
Redondo Union High School
Adams Middle School
Parras Middle School
Alta Vista Elementary School
Beryl Elementary School
Birney Elementary School
Jefferson Elementary School

Business
Must Support the Future of Redondo Beach
By Glenn Bishop
Chair of the Board
The
Chamber is supporting the Redondo Beach Unified School
District’s proposed bond measure on the February 5, 2008
ballot. The majority of the bond measure is being used
toward our over 100 year old high school that will update
many facilities throughout the campus. There are also monies
for the elementary and middle schools.
We need this bond now more than ever.
The school district has improving test scores, an excellent
leadership team, great teachers, and students. The bond will
help with the one lacking area needed to put the District
over the top and that is the continued modernization of
facilities. The previous school bond, which attempted to
modernize all classrooms, accomplished much of this, but
given the effects of construction inflation, fell short.
The new bond measure attempts to complete the job so that
Redondo Beach School District Infrastructure will be taken
care of over the next 30-40 years. This will help prepare
the many students within the District to be competitive when
applying for college and hitting the job market.
I urge you to join us in securing the bond’s passage.
